Welcome to Campbeltown, Kintyre.

Towards the very Mull of Kintyre, the Wee Toon as it is fondly known, is the largest town on the peninsula and has a modest population of around 6,000. Campbeltown, is widely recognised for its unique history, particularly with whisky, and its strong community achievements. Only fifteen minutes from Machrihanish, which has one of Scotland's best links courses at Machrihanish Golf Club. Just one hour by car from Tarbert, Campbeltown is a realistic destination for a short or long weekend and also one of the through destinations on the recently established Kintyre Way walk which spans much of Kintyre.

Once known as the 'Whisky Capital Of Scotland', with between 17 and 21 working distilleries in and around the town in the mid to late 1800's such as Hazelburn which closed in 1836, although one superb distillery called Springbank still exists and is an internationally popular whisky. Campbeltown, which has a sizeable harbour, welcoming yachts and other sea going vessels is also home to a fishing fleet, although this is much smaller than many years ago where Campbeltown was a major commercial fishing centre. As you would expect, fresh seafood is available from hotels and restaurants throughout the town, complimenting other highly regarded food establishments and harbours such as Tarbert and Carradale, also on the Kintyre peninsula.

Historically, Campbeltown, similarly to Tarbert in the 1900's were visited by steamer boats bringing visitors from along the Clyde to the town, with many who came to play golf at Machrihanish. A small train used to run from the town to Machrihanish for just that. Steamers had been servicing Campbeltown from as far back as 1816, and whiskies exported from the town by this very method to the markets in Glasgow.

Campbeltown, is amodern town in every respect with high street shops, restaurants and plenty of activities and tourist destinations including the wonderful owl sanctuary, Mull of Kintyre lighthouse and much more.
